Extraordinary and fantastic journey through the Andes Mountains, rescued from history, following the same paths that the Liberating Army traveled in 1817 to free Chile from the Spanish monarchy. It is an expedition that crosses rivers, sharing with “huasos” and “gauchos” and their typical customs and traditions, framed by the highest mountains in America: Mercedario (6.770 m) and Aconcagua (6.959 m), the highest in the continent, covered with glaciers and eternal snow.

During our tour you will discover a breathtaking landscape of our Andes mountain range showing abrupt and semi-arid in the low zones, and barren and stony mountain range in the snow zone. The wind and the cold will sculpt your temper and you will have to overcome the obstacles that the mountain presents. An abundant wildlife will be seen finding Guanacos, Vizcachas and Cóndores that watch their territory from the heights.

1. 1 DAY - Santiago - San Felipe - Los Patos

We will begin during the afternoon our trip from your hotel to San Felipe, vineyard area in the Aconcagua Valley. Then we will continue to Putaendo, from where we will go to Los Patos where we will meet to have dinner. We will camp in this place.

2. 2 DAY - Los Patos - Maitén Bonito

Our adventure begins after breakfast. We will load the mules and ascend from the Chalaco River to reach Maiten Bonito (Altitude 2.200 mts). We will cross the river on numerous occasions surrounded by maitenes. These places are marked by semi-desert vegetation, sparse greenery and many cacti. We will camp around a nice campfire.

3. 3 DAY -Maitén Bonito - Vegas del ciénago

7 HOURS RIDING (Altitude 3530 mts)

After a blunt breakfast, we continue following the course of the Chalaco River. We will cross the Colorada pass. Here we will have to descend from our horses and walk since the path is over the 1.000 meters above the river. The vegetation during this section is scarce; we will be able to appreciate small shrubs characteristic of the central zone of the Andes such as the “Cacho de Cabra” or the colorful “yareta”. Then we will continue our journey through “Las vegas del ciénago”. This sector is covered by a long stretch of grass that contrasts with the mountains in a wonderful landscape, where we will camp. At this point we will report to the border guards and camp.

4. 4 DAY - Vegas del Ciénago - Valle Hermoso

6 HOURS RIDING (Altitude 3.300 mts)

Early in the morning we will begin our adventure following the course of the Rocín River to the Chilean-Argentine border. Animals will ascend slowly along narrow paths. The bushes and grass begin to scarce, but not the flowers that begin to become noticeable. In the limit we will meet the Argentine gauchos, who with the Chilean huasos have very different ways of dressing, riding and carrying the mules. We will begin our descent to the Argentine side until we reach Valle Hermoso, passing through the Volcán River. After showing our documentation at the Lodge Ingeniero Sardinas we will have dinner and camp.

5. 5 DAY - Valle Hermoso - Sardinas Engineer

Today we can get up later. After breakfast we will have the possibility to go for a walk to acclimatize and enjoy the beauties of the place. We can do walks around and those who want to fish can do it. As a way to get to know the area better, we will carry out a workshop on map reading, distance calculation, compass use and emergency signals. In this way we will learn height survival techniques.

6. 6 DAY - Valle Hermoso - Los Patos Sur River - Rancho de Latas

Early in the morning we will start the march again. The wonderful greenery of the grasslands, the water pools and the great variety of birds will enchant us during our journey. We will discover an amazing aquatic life that contrasts with the imposing height of the mountain range of Cerro La Mesa (6.280 mts). We continue up the Los Patos river to reach the Los Patillos river, which will bring us closer to the last mountain range that we will find in the vast and fertile valley of the La Honda pass. We will camp at the base of Rancho Las Latas.

7. 7 DAY - Rancho de Catas - Manantiales

This day will be of great physical effort for the animals since we will have to climb the Espinacito cord through winding roads in the La Honda pass, to 4.500 mts. In some sectors the ascent becomes dramatic due to the great effort that animals must make. We will rest and then continue the trip to the summit. From this point we will have a spectacular view of the Andes mountain range. Later we will begin our descent to the Las Leñas river to reach El Peñón, where we will camp.

8. 8 DAY - Manantiales - Hornillas - Uspallata

This will be our last day of march. After leaving our camp we will continue along the Las Leñas river towards Manantiales. Beautiful fertile valleys are found at these altitudes. Here we can appreciate one of the most impressive rock formations of the trip, similar to those of the films of the far west. Then we will descend towards Hornillas, through the black pampa where a vehicle will wait for us to take us to Barreal, a small oasis in the middle of the mountains. We will continue by minibus to Uspallata where we will arrive at our hotel.

9. 9 DAY - Uspallata - Los Libertadores - Hotel in Santiago

We will begin our return to Santiago after breakfast. We will cross the border at the Los Libertadores pass. The beautiful road crosses the mountains on a winding route that takes us to the Chilean-Argentine border, where we must carry out customs and migration procedures. We will descend later to Santiago where we will end our services.

Although we will do our best to follow the itinerary explained above, it is subject to change due to weather or other unexpected events beyond our control.
